What is a Reconstructionist Congregation?
Reconstructionists affirm the evolving nature of Jewish beliefs and practices, viewing Judaism as a civilization encompassing culture, ethics, and spirituality rather than solely as a religion. They advocate for inclusivity, egalitarianism, and the active participation of all members in shaping their Jewish identity and community life.
At our synagogue, we celebrate the wisdom of Torah with a focus on inclusivity and relevance to today's world. Join us in exploring how ancient teachings can inspire and guide us in our everyday lives.
Meet the Rabbi
Rabbi David White was ordained a Conservative rabbi by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1975. He landed at Kol Shofar in Marin in 1977, leaving after 14 years, and in 1994 taking a half-time rabbi position at Congregation Beth Sholom in Napa. He started an organization called “WineSpirit,” which connects wine and spirituality, and he also started facilitating Napa Men’s and Women’s groups. In 2004, Rabbi White transitioned to Congregation B’nai Israel, helping the community through an arson fire at the synagogue in June 2004, when they held services outside in the parking lot during repairs. He has done several “Judaism and Baseball” talks with Marty Lurie, the former Giants baseball radio commentator on KNBR, and was instrumental in encouraging the synagogue to be one of the founding members of Common Ground in 2013. The organization, with faith-based members, unions, and non-profits, spearheads common projects that all members support, and is currently working on affordable housing. Rabbi White has also continued the Interfaith Thanksgiving Service shared with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Benicia, alternating hosting the event for more than 20 years. He continues to lead the congregation in learning how Judaic values can be translated for and applied in daily living, with Judaism as a means to quality of life rather than an end unto itself.

Our History
Congregation B’nai Israel (originally known as the “Sons and Daughters of Israel”) was founded in 1920, consisting of immigrants and business owners drawn to the bustling naval town of Vallejo, CA. Services were held in homes until the congregation was able to purchase a home on York St that was eventually remodeled into Solano County’s first synagogue. Today, the congregation meets at the temple on Nebraska St, which recently celebrated its 75th anniversary as the home of Congregation B’nai Israel.
